It's a short and sweet post this week. I got tired of trying to figure out who owned the no name papers, so I set up this tray. I told the students that if they didn't get a paper back when we passed them out on Mondays, they better look in the tray!
Now a lot of these students I've had for 2 years and I easily recognize their handwriting or their parent's signature. On those papers, I write their name on the top. But for those papers that I can't easily tell, into the tray they go. The students are usually pretty good about checking to see if they have a paper in the tray. All papers get passed back on Monday to go home with their weekly reports. They usually notice if they don't get something back that someone else has on their desk. If they find one of their no name papers, they put their name on it and give it back to me so they can receive their points.

I tried this, but in fourth grade...they don't check. Ever. So instead of an adorably labeled bin, I have to wait until everyone else gets their paper back and then announce "Whoever didn't get their paper back, it's going into recycling in 10 seconds unless you come on up!" Harsh, but one less bin to worry about. ;)
ReplyDeleteMy 5th graders are a little better at checking it than the 6th graders. I occasionally have to remind them to check it. The tray is right by my desk, so if I happen to be there and they come up to me there they always see it and check through the papers.
DeleteBrilliant idea- making my sign tomorrow. I'll make it a rule that for every unclaimed piece of work in there at the end of the day I'll fine them $1 in our class economy program :) (They HATE being fined!)

That sounds like an awesome plan! Let us know how it goes.
DeleteI like the idea of the bin. At the beginning of last year I made a NO NAME sign to hang on my board. I saw the idea on Pinterest and decided to make my own. I check papers all the time, so my sign doesn't have many pegs on it, as anything that goes up there doesn't stay long. Kind of like Amber stated above, if they don't claim it within a few hours, it goes into my "blue bin" (recycling). The NO NAME sign really worked! It's now June and I NEVER have to use it. I also have a sign in my hand in bin in the shape of a STOP sign that says STOP! Is your name on this? Students have to lift the sign up to submit a paper, therefore making a tacit agreement that they HAVE put their name on the paper. Both of these things combined made my life much easier. I plan on using the same system next year too! Too see my NO NAME board ( I made it for about $3) check it out here: http://teachingisagift.blogspot.ca/2012/08/back-to-school-madness.html.

What an awesome idea! Thanks for sharing.
DeleteI had a place where I clipped the papers on my chalkboard...but they were always falling down. This is a much more effective way to keep the "no name" papers neat. Thanks for the idea and for linking up :)
